Ahhh the power of open source, not only is it helping with education in Brazil as this article shows, but it has to be a blow to Microsoft to boot. Imagine trying to do the same with M$ machines and servers, the cost would most definately be prohibitive.
I think this is another excellent step in the right direction. I could see where some thing like this would benefit a lot of schools.

I happened apun my old iMac the other day, it’s one of those all in one deals. Think they called it a jellybean or something similar to that. Anyway I am running out of file space on my main system, and thought that just maybe it would make a nice little file server for a little extra storage and a few other things. After booting it up, first time I bet in over a year, I discovered I had already installed a linux system on it, but wanted to convert it to openSuse 11. Figuring it would make it a tad easier. There are many many posts saying why linux is failing. If I had a dollar for every post and article I’ve read or seen the title too I could probably buy a nce car or something like that. I will probably end up repeating what some one else has said, I just haven’t seen it yet. Read the rest of this entry »

Today has not been a good day by any stretch of the imagination. Besides my depression, and an altercation with my son before I even had my first cup of coffee , my mouse and keyboard decide they have had enough and decided to go by the way side.
So off I got to the local Wally World (walmat for the rest of you folks) to get replacements. Which I was able to do with out to much problems, though it was money that I really didn’t have to spend. Luckly I had enough pop cans to turn in to cover it.
But I am used to a split keyboard and Wally world does not sell them, so I am stuck with a straight. Ugh, it is extremely hard for me to type. But least it works. Now if I could get the extra keys on both the keyboard and mouse working I’d be a happy camper. Unfortunately I can’t find anything in the suse distro to help me do that. Ah well , something else to put on the ever expanding ‘to do list’

I recently found a new font that I wanted to use for here and there on the web. So I located the font download intended for linux and downloaded it to my box. The next problem, since I have never done this before, was how exactly to install the fonts and or where to put them so they could be found. So I turned to the openSuse forums and did a quick search, found a mention if you were using Gnome, to open the file browser and type “font:///”, wondering if KDE was by chance the same way I gave it a short.

I’m lazy, or to put it another way - I have more important things to do beside trying to remember to update my system. Especially since I am running KDE4.1, there is a lot of improvements and bug fixes every day. It just makes sense to keep up to date. And if your a brave soul and running the beta you already know the heart ache of those pesky bugs and what not. Read the rest of this entry »

Well could not stand it any longer and upgraded my desktop from KDE 4.0 to KDE 4.1-beta. And I must say, it appears to be more stable then the 4.0, but it does have it’s problems here and there. Like when moving from desktop to desktop, I have 6, the plasmoids and wall paper do not show. And after the update today, I lose the default panel along the bottom. Oh well, still nice, wonder if the problem happens cause of dual monitor display? Who knows.
The KRunner is nice, hit Alt-F2 and you get a nice lil dialog. Real handy as a calculator too I found out be accident lol. Anyways, still exploring, breaking, repairing and playing.
Keep up the good work peeps on KDE 4.1

I had the same problem when I installed openSuse 10.3 as I did when I upgraded to openSuse 11, in regards to a dual monitor set up. The nVidia drivers just did not give the option for dual monitor.
The first time through a good friend of mine helped me out with the problem. And determined that the wrong video driver was installed, which was true. We thought that perhaps this was the same problem this time around. But after checking we had the correct drivers. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve been running the new version openSuse 11 for a couple of days now and as I would expect there are a “few” bugs in the system. Mainly in some of the KDE 4 apps, KMail being the most trouble some. all is well until you try to put in a filter, then it crashes.
There are a few other area’s where I have a few problems, just can’t remember them at the moment.
I do like the new features of KDE 4 and compiz, I thought it would be so much eye candy but after using it for a couple of days it ’s nice. Helps a bit with the organization of windows, which for some reason I seem to always have a lot open.
There have been more then a few complains on the suse forums of making KDE 4 the default install, cause of the problems. Which are to be expected even from suse, though it is far better then the troubles installing M$ Vista or upgrading to Vista.
My major problem with KDE 4 is setting up KDevelop 3 to work the way I want it to rofl.
